Some might tell you that cornmeal is basically flour made from corn. Whereas flour is ground wheat, cornmeal is ground corn. This is a decent description, but it's not entirely accurate. How long can you store cornmeal?

Since cornmeal is typically sold in big, 5-pound bags, you may wonder whether you can use a whole bag before it expires. Here's some good news: it should last about a year. Make sure you keep it in a sealed container so that pests cannot get to it. If you store it in the fridge, it may keep a few months longer.

What are some other ways to use cornmeal?

In North America, people tend to use cornmeal most often to make cornbread. But here are some other ideas to help awaken your creativity:

  • Add a few spoonfuls when you make oatmeal
  • Look for corn cracker recipes
  • Substitute 1/4 cup of cornmeal for 1/4 cup of the flour in your favorite cookie and muffin recipes
  • Use it in place of half the flour in your pancakes
